This is a moot question about which there is not universal agreement among astrologers. I suspect that the sidereal zodiac is referenced to the Pleiades and the fixes star Regalus (called car leonies the lions heart) for the following reasons. The Pleiades is a small cluster of stars in the constellation of Taurus. The cluster contains hundred of stars but only seven of them are bright enough to be visible to the naked eye. The Pleiades figures prominently in the mythology of many ancient cultures and is considered one of the three major sources of cosmic energy for our solar system in the Alice Bailey teachings. Several things are remarkable about the Pleiades and Regulus which are lined up almost perfectly with the plane of the ecliptic. That is to say they are stationed almost perfectly on the path that the sun appears to travel through space as seen from the earth. The Pleiades and Regulus are in almost perfect quadrate or 90º square angle to each other in their position on the ecliptic. Both the Pleiades and Regulus are at this time changing signs in the tropical zodiac due to precession. As the vernal equinox moved backwards in the sidereal zodiac due to precession the stars of the sidereal zodiac move forward in the tropical zodiac.
Both the Pleiades and Regulus are moving from Beastial signs Taurus in the case of the Pleiades and Leo in the case of Regulus to human signs Gemini in the case of the Pleiades and Virgo in the case of Regulus. There are only 3 zodiacal signs, which incorporate the human figure in their pictorial symbol. They are Gemini the Twins Virgo the Virgin and Aquarius the Water Bearer. These are called human sings and they represent a more mental and potentially enlightened consciousness.
All three are associated with the planet Mercury. Mercury is the ruling planet of Gemini and Virgo and is exalted in Aquarius. The Pleiades moving into Gemini from Taurus and Regulus moving from Leo to Virgo at this time is highly significant and could well herald the beginning of the Aquarian age. The symbolism of the Sphinx is significant here. The Sphinx has the body of a lion and the head of a woman thus representing the Leo Virgo cusp. Regulus crossing from Leo to Virgo could well represent the time in history when the mysteries, which the Sphinx guards will begin to be revealed to humanity as foretold by Edgar Cayce and other seers. At this time important archeological finds are being made of hidden underground chambers between the powers of the Sphinx as foretold by Edgar Cayce for the end of the 20th century.
